Name of the Parish : Mary Rani Church, Keralapuram.

The Parish is dedicated to Our Lady. It is entrusted to the Southern Indian province of the Congregation of the Mission. Situated on Kollam � Shencottai National Highway, 12 KM away from Kollam. Village: Keralapuram, Panchayat: Elampalloor

Population : Mainly consists of Muslims and Hindus Comparatively Christian Population is meager.

History of the Parish : Bifurcating the Chemmakkad Parish in 1978 Keralapuram parish was erected and entrusted to the Vincentians congregation of the Missions. The history of Keralapuram Parish begins on 16 th June 1976, with the arrival of Fr. Cherian Kariankal C.M. at Keralapuram. On 26 th June 1976 Rt. Rev. Jerome M. Fernandez formally inaugurated the establishment of Vincentians at Keralapuram and entrusted the Parish to their care.
 

Fr. Cherian Kariankal laid the foundation for the present Parish Church on 25 th May 1980. Rt. Rev. Joseph G. Fernandez blessed the Church on 15 th August 1981.Rt. Rev. Stanley Roman laid the foundation for the renovation of the Church on 15 th August 2003. As part of extension work, the present portico and the front elevation are added to the Church. The renovated Church was blessed on 23 rd January 2004 by the Bishop of Quilon.

Vision & Mission statement of the Parish : After the ecclesiastical model of First Christian Community, the parish of Keralapuram strive to live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus through a life of authentic Christian witness and value oriented spiritual perfection.Under the active guidance of the Vincentian Fathers the Parish attains new dimension in its journey of perfection. Inspired by the Vincentian ideal of spiritual perfection, apostolic zeal and Christian Charity the Parish centers its mission towards the integral transformation and development of its members and other persons associated with it in one-way or other.Fostering and spreading spiritual devotion to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal and holding fast to its proud heritage, the Parish strives to promote genuine and authentic Marian devotion among the members and the Christian Community around it.

Administration of the Parish : The Parish has a well-constituted parish Council. The finance committee and other sub-committees help in the temporal and spiritual administration of the parish. BCC also is actively involved in the Parish activities.

Families : 190. There were less than 40 families at the beginning of this Parish - most of the being masons and daily workers. Later on, due to better living condition and communication facilities, many families have settled here from near by Parishes like Kumbalam, Padappakara etc.

Socio-economic conditions: There are three categories

•  Employed Class: working in Government and Private sectors. They are economically well off

•  Maisons and daily workers: vast majority of the people belong to this class. The life condition depends on the amount work they get.

•  Gulf workers and business people: They are mainly unskilled workers and so their income not so sound. There are also a few running shops, doing contract works etc.,

People have developed a special devotion to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal. They used to gather at the shrine on every Wednesday in the evening and recite the Rosary, Novena etc together. To foster this devotion the Parish has now Holy Mass, Novena and special prayer service on every Wednesday evening. Religious status : The people are generally pious and devout. Almost all the parishioners attend the Sunday Mass. People are actively involved in the liturgical activities of the Church. Renewal retreats are conducted every year. Pious associations like St. Vincent De Paul Society, Little way Associations, CLC, K.C.Y.M. etc. actively support the activities of the Parish. Status of the Women and children : Women are generally educated. There are a few women working as teachers, Government employees and nurses. A good number of women work in cashew factories. Almost all the children are school going. Educational strength : All the parishioners are literate.

Socio-Pastoral priorities:

  1. Fostering of unity and oneness in the Parish
  2. Special attention to the development of the poor and economically backword members of the Parish.
  3. Education of the poor children.
  4. Empowerment of women
  5. Propagation of Marian devotion
  6. De-addiction and settlement of alcoholics.
  7. Renovation and extension of the Church
  8. Construction of an open auditorium in collaboration with the school
  9. Popularization of Devotion to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal and the celebration of its feast in a solemn way.
  10. Construction of a multi-purpose hall project to be executed.
  11. Sunday Catechism classes are regularly done. Timely Seminars and social awareness Programme on various themes are conducted.
